The Department of History is one of the most popular and pioneering Departments of Burdwan Raj College. Its emergence as a separate entity took place in 1958, when the Honours course was introduced. Since then, it has come a long way in popularizing History both as a discipline and a career-building opportunity for residents in and around Bardhaman.

The Department aims to make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities like museum visits, in Indian history in the context of world history. A critical understanding of the past helps in better comprehension of the present and better view of the upcoming times. Our aim also encompasses provision of unique learning experiences for the students through proper utilization of the syllabus.

We are dedicated to:

• Making students aware of the past and its legacies through our teaching, research, and extension activities like museum visits, in Indian history in the context of world history.
• Promoting critical understanding of the past which helps learners attain comprehensive understanding of the present and better view of the upcoming times.
• Provisioning a unique learning experience for the students through proper implementation of the programmes contained in the curriculum.

Our objectives are:

• To transform students into citizens who are well informed about the past and consequences for the present.
• To empower them to cope with the challenges of globalization by instilling in them a life-long passion for learning about the past.
• To inform them about the inter-connections between global, national, regional and local history will equip the students to face challenges with confidence.
• To prepare them for a wide range of careers through the study of societies, cultures and economies across a broad chronological and geographical spectrum.

• We have a fully operational museum which possesses historical exhibits from Burdwan and surrounding areas which enhances historical consciousness amongst learners and establishing a flair for museology amongst them.
• Overall monitoring performance of students through regular assessments, evaluating the leaners’ progress regularly through Class Tests, Assignments and Projects.
• Organization of tutorial classes, popular lectures with interactions, quiz contests, group discussions. Regular holding of Parents-Teachers meets, remedial classes etc.
• Educational Excursions are undertaken as per curricular requirements to different places of historical importance such as Delhi-Agra-Jaipur, Nalanda-Rajgir, Puri-Konark. Bandel Church and Hooghly Imambara, Chandannagar, Bishnupur, Murshidabad, Garh Panchakot, Mukutmanipur and Panchet Dams etc.
• Teachers of the Department regularly update themselves through mandatory attendance in Orientation and Refresher Courses, Seminars and Workshops. The Department, within its limited resources, also organizes Seminars and workshops.

• Consistent academic performance is the hallmark our department. Every year our band of sincere and talented students perform well in the University Examinations. Many of our ex-students are engaged in University, Colleges, Schools, playing an active part in different social services. Some are also engaged in different administrative capacities having been placed in Government and non-Government jobs.
• Besides studies, many of our students are actively engaged in NCC/NSS. They also participate in Annual College Social Programme where they exhibit their own hand-made charts, posters, datasheets, models, drawings handicrafts to explain a relevant theme for public knowledge and thereby creating mass awareness. It enhances their thinking capacity and power of imagination. They also regularly participate in Annual Sports, Quiz Contests, Debate Competitions etc.
