The Department of History is one of the most popular and pioneering Departments of Burdwan Raj College. Its emergence as a separate entity took place in 1958, when the Honours course was introduced. Since then, it has come a long way in popularizing History both as a discipline and a career-building opportunity for residents in and around Bardhaman.
The Department aims to make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities like museum visits, in Indian history in the context of world history. A critical understanding of the past helps in better comprehension of the present and better view of the upcoming times. Our aim also encompasses provision of unique learning experiences for the students through proper utilization of the syllabus.
We are dedicated to:
- Making students aware of the past and its legacies through our teaching, research, and extension activities like museum visits, in Indian history in the context of world history.

- To empower them to cope with the challenges of globalization by instilling in them a life-long passion for learning about the past.
- To inform them about the inter-connections between global, national, regional and local history will equip the students to face challenges with confidence.
- To prepare them for a wide range of careers through the study of societies, cultures and economies across a broad chronological and geographical spectrum.
