The department of Economics, Burdwan Raj College started its journey towards pursuit of academic excellence in the year 1964. Since its inception several celebrated teachers have embellished the faculty position in the department and enriched this seat of learning. The alumni of this department consist of a galaxy of distinguished persons who have achieved high accolades in their respective positions both nationally and internationally.

The chief objective of our department is to elevate our teaching standards comparable to the best of the colleges in the country and to introduce innovation, excellence, and novelty in teaching-learning methods, so that our students may generate a superior analytical grasp of the national as well as global economic problems and rise to the need of the society for alleviating those problems.

The main focus of the Economics Department has been to offer high-quality education in the fundamental discipline while also promoting a broad perspective. The department encourages students to explore beyond the prescribed curriculum and not solely concentrate on achieving success in examinations.

We aim to:

• To develop and flourish the academic environment by promoting quality in teaching and learning.
• To develop analytical and problem-solving skills among students.
• To provide high-quality, career-oriented education for students on the one hand and to develop among students a value-based mindset, intellectual perception, and social and environmental sensitivity through varied programmes that go beyond the pure syllabus-oriented academic pursuits on the other hand.
• To prepare our students enough equipped to forecast the future trends of national and global economic scenarios and spell out the strategies needed for facing the future.
• To promote multi-disciplinary knowledge among students to widen their employment opportunities.

• The department possesses a rich collection of books and journals kept in its seminar library which amply serves the purpose of the students by enabling them to borrow books and providing reading facility as well.
• Teachers are extremely flexible in helping students improve their performance through continuous teaching and learning processes.

The curricula of the under-graduate level are at par with that of any renowned institution and is periodically adjusted to the requirements and demand of the society. Every year students of this department compulsorily undertake a survey in rural/urban areas or elsewhere matching with their objectives. This is a part of extension outreach programme of their curricula and after survey they are to submit a project report. This event exposes them to the stark realities apart from subject knowledge acquired from books and classroom teaching. The survey and projects undertaken by students are held under active guidance of all teachers of this department.

The teachers in the department maintain a very cordial and amicable relation with the students and take utmost care of their academic problems. During the annual event of college exhibition every year, students of our department actively participate with their innovative and artistic efforts, which often earn them prizes and acclaim. Apart from teaching, teachers in our department are continuously engaged in up encouraging their learners through various coursework, participation in different seminars, publishing articles in leading journals and engaging themselves in various works allotted to them by university and college authority.

• Alumni of the dept consists of a galaxy of persons who have excelled in their careers both in academics and administration and are highly acclaimed in their respective positions in both India and abroad.
• Students from this department have consistently excelled in various competitive examinations including SSC, WBCS, Banking etc and got placement in various Govt. and private Sector jobs. Many of them, pursuing higher studies, succeeded in NET/SET exams and/or completed PhD. Many of them are now serving as College/University teachers.
• Students of this department have many a times achieved top most University ranks.
• In the recent past three UGC-sponsored minor research projects have been completed by the faculties of this department.
